Kamala Harris
Kamala Devi Harris, born October 20, 1964 is a prominent American politician as well as a lawyer. She is currently the 49th vice president of the United States. She is the first female vice president and is the highest ranking female official in U.S history. She is a part of the Democratic Party and was previously the attorney general of California between 2011 and 2017. Additionally, she served as an United States senator representing California between 2017-2021. Harris was born in Oakland and graduated from Howard University, University of California, Hastings College of the Law. Harris began her career at the Alameda County District Attorney's Office prior to her move to the San Francisco District Attorney's Office and then to the City Attorney of San Francisco's office. In 2003 she was elected San Francisco District Attorney. In 2010 she was appointed Attorney General of California and re-elected in 2014. Harris was the junior member of the United States Senate from California from 2017 to 2021. Harris beat Loretta Sanchez in the 2016 Senate election to become the second African American woman and the first South Asian American to serve in the United States Senate. Harris was a senator and campaigned for reforms to healthcare, federal cannabis de-scheduling, an opportunity to become a citizen for undocumented immigrant immigrants and the DREAM Act, a ban against assault weapons and progressive tax reform. In the news, attention was paid to her outspoken examination of Trump administration officials during Senate hearings. The most notable was Trump's second Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh who was accused of sexual abuse.
